Enhancing your sporting experience with the right sunglasses

Sunglasses are necessary in protecting the eyes from harmful ultraviolet(UV) rays that may cause eye damage. Ultraviolet rays of concern are UVA and UVB. Ultraviolet rays may damage the cornea, the lens and the retina which may cause future problems such as cataracts (clouding of the lens in the eye) and photokeratitis, a temporary burning of the cornea. Good sunglasses block out both UVA and UVB rays.

Sport sunglasses can enhance your performance by offering lightweight, flexible and durable frame materials. The frame may be more shock absorbing with shatterproof polycarbonate lenses. A ventilation system will increase the air flow behind the lens to keep it cool and reduce fogging. Non-slip temples and cushion nosepads will increase the comfort.

Polarized lenses help to reduce glare—reflected light which travels on a horizontal plane. Virtually any surface can be a source of glare including water, sand, pavement, ice and snow. Polarized lenses have a polarized filter which absorbs the horizontal light thus eliminating the glare. You are left with sharp, crisp, glare-free vision with increased contrast and depth perception.

Boaters have known for many years of the value of polarized sunglasses. Now the active sports enthusiast has found that polarized sunglasses have benefited them. This includes joggers, bikers, kayaking and of course fishermen to name a few.

An important element of a good quality sunglass is optical quality lenses. They should block out the glare, protect against UVA and UVB ultraviolet light and offer a wide range of tinted lenses, such as gray, green, brown and rose. Blocking out the glare without changing the overall color perception will work well for all outdoor and all-weather uses. Some manufacturers now offer changeable lens systems to provide for that purpose. Look into the convenience of changeable lens systems to be able to wear clear lenses for dark conditions, dark lenses for sunny conditions and yellow and orange for low-light situations.

Whatever outdoor sport you participate in, there is a sunglass that is right for you.

You will be amazed as tot he technology of sport-specific sunglasses which can enhance your sporting experience.
